Rivalries:

What makes College Football, College Football

College football is not the same as in the NFL. There is hatred, yes, but not on the same level as teams here. Whether there is some history to it or not, rivalries are fun to watch. Big-hitting games are what rivals want and they get plenty of it. Here is a few intense rivalries and how they compare to "The Game"; The Buckeyes versus  the *ichigan Wolverines.

Auburn v.s Alabama:

The Iron Bowl

Rivalries couldn't get better than this. Auburn and Alabama duking it out on the last day of the regular season. Both teams are highly rated, bringing in multiple talented kids from across the nation. This rivalry, several years in a row, has had championship implications.

Record: Alabama (42-35-1)

Year announced rivalry(YAR): 1893

Why?: The two schools couldn't agree on what year one of the game should count towards.

California v.s Stanford

The Big Game

Here is a rivalry that has had some of greats pass through. Aaron Rodger used to play for Cal. when he was in college. Here is one of the older rivalries that isn't the same as it used to be. In modern football Stanford is the major powerhouse. But in the 1900's both of these teams would slug it out to get into the Rose Bowl. For them, the winner of this game was more than just bragging rights.

YAR: 1892

Why?: The colleges are located only 40 miles away. The schools also are rivals in many other sports.

Georgia v.s Florida

*The Fruit Bowl*

The Forgotten Rivalry is what some people refer to it as, which is true because both teams have other major rivals now. For example, Florida has FSU and Georgia has Georgia Tech to deal with. If you look into the details however, these teams thoroughly hate each other. The universities are on the borders of each state so they close in proximity. So close, that since 1933, they have played in Jacksonville, Florida. This rivalry is so big, there is a Georgia-Florida Hall of Fame.

YAR: 1904

Why?: In 1904, the two schools could not agree on who won the game. Ironically in 1905 Georgia won 37-0.

"Run, Lindsay, Run" 1980 Game. This last second play allowed Georgia to go to the National Championship and win.

Notre Dame v.s USC

The Jeweled Shillelagh

Here is the first non-conference rivalry we have seen and you'll be surprised because these two teams have a locked a rivalry at the end of the season. Notre Dame is an independent school, which means they aren't in a conference. So for them to have a rivalry is pretty impressive. For several years both colleges has spoiled the others championship run. A more recent rivalry however, there is no shortage of fun such as in 1966 Notre Dame shut out USC 51-0.

Record: Notre Dame (45-35-5)

YAR: 1926

Why?: There is actually two theories of how this rivalry was made. However, the more popular one states that the wives of the school owners organized the game.

Oklahoma v.s Texas

The Red River Showdown

Going down in the wild-wild west is where this game is located. A classic battle between two western powerhouses; Oklahoma and Texas University.

Two highly praised teams playing each other every year, usually trying to get to the BCS Championship game. Whoever wins the shootout gets crowned the Red River king.

YAR: 1900

Why?: In the middle 1900's there were eight times where Texas and Oklahoma were ranked 1 & 2: most ever in a rivalry.

Clemson v.s South Carolina

The Palmetto Bowl

Another in-state rivalry but this time on the other side of the U.S. Clemson and South Carolina is one of the oldest rivalry in history. The schools are separated by 135 miles so every game is a home game. Only recently has both teams been noticeably good but in the 1900's these games were hard hitting.

YAR: 1896

Why?: When the two schools started out they became instant enemies as they fought over farmland.

1977 "The Catch"

Florida State v.s Miami (FL.)

The Florida Cup

You know how I said the major rivalry in Florida is Florida and FSU. Well its not. FSU and Miami each year duke it out in the Florida Cup. This rivalry has drawn some of the highest TV ratings ever. These two teams love ruining championship runs and usually end up going themselves. In general, the state of Florida has some intense games and this tops that list for sure. In total there were 5 missed game-winning field goals over the years.

Record: Miami (31-28)

YAR: 1951

Why?: Both teams are highly ranked and draw huge attention so it just adds to the drama.

2005 "Miami Muff" This mistake lost them the game.

Army v.s Navy

*The Militia Bowl*

A rivalry from two unique military schools. In fact, a military rivalry that is unique. Army and Navy are two colleges that bring in military kids to go to school. This isn't going to be a rivalry full of hatred, no. Both teams play this game for the fun of the game. This game is so special it was the first to use instant replay. In three straight years (92' 93' 94') was won on field goals.

YAR: 1890

Why?: These two teams are the major military academies that play each other every year. It has it's own date of play.

Ohio State v.s Michigan

The Game

Here is the biggest rivalry in the game. Blood full of hatred flowing through everyone. Tempers on the rise and not from just the players. A rivalry made after a war of a city; The Toledo War. In 1835 Ohio and Michigan got into a dispute over the city of Toledo. Now these two states are tense but when one of the former Ohio State coaches moved to Michigan the intensity of this game got 10 times better.

Why?: A war over Toledo and the "betrayal" of an Ohio State coach transferring to Michigan.
