Ohio State football has been around for a little over a century. Like every sports team they have their ups and downs. Over these 140 or so years, several coaches have stepped up to try and make their team #1. Some do an amazing job and some to the complete opposite. Here are some Ohio State coaches who have improved OSU with their presence

What he did to change OSU:

  • Started the golden pants award pin when Ohio State beats Michigan

  • Famous for his reply for his 1st year  "Those fellows put their pants on one leg at a time, the same as everyone else." He is dissing Michigan with this statement.

Francis Schmidt

  • 1944-1945

  • 18W 8L 1D

  • 89% of the time he won

  • Coached the first Heisman Trophy winner

  • Learned under Paul Brown

What he did for OSU:

  • He was able to follow the footsteps of Paul Brown and win a National Championship in his 1st year

Carroll Widdoes

  • 1951-1978

  • 76% of the time he won

  • AFCA Coach of the Year (1957)

  • Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year (1957, 1968, 1975)

  • Walter Camp Coach of the Year (1968)

  • Coached Archie Griffin

  • College Football HOF

  • He was known for recruiting African-Americans in large numbers.

  • He really hated Michigan

Woody Hayes

  • 1979-1987

  • 108W 81L 26D

  • 76% of the time he won

  • AFCA Coach of the Year (1979)

  • Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year (1979)

  • College Football HOF

What he did to change OSU

  • Started the dot the “I” tradition

Earl Bruce

  • 1988-2000

  • 111W 43L 4D

  • 72% of the time he won

  • College Football HOF

  • Had a team loaded with future NFL stars almost every year

What he did to change OSU:

  • Had arguably the most ever loaded OSU team ever

John Cooper

  • 2001-2010

  • 94W 22L

  • 81% of the time he won

  • College Football HOF

  • AFCA Coach of the Year (2002)

  • Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year (2002)

  • Paul "Bear" Bryant Award (2002)

  • Known for conservative style of play

What he did to change OSU:

  • Became the first college team to go 14-0

  • Played the first ever Michigan game as 1 & 2

Jim Tressel

  • 2012- present

  • 61W 6L

  • 91% percent of time he has won so far

  • Won first ever College football playoff

  • Loves spread option and running QB’s

  • Coached a 3rd QB to win Big 10 game, and CFP

  • Coached the first ever over time game versus Michigan

What did to change OSU:

  • Won first ever CFP

  • Had the largest draft class ever

Urban Meyer

  • 1899-1901

  • 22W 4L 3D

  • 81% of the time he won

  • First coach with a winning record

What he did to change OSU:

  • When one of his players died he came back and coached his team to victory
